Google announced on Wednesday that in 2020, it has blocked or removed 3.1 billion bad ads worldwide, including 99 million covid-19 related ads. A total of 6.4 billion ads were also blocked by the company. Google is sharing data on ad restrictions for the first time this year.
According to Google’s annual Ad Safety Report for 2020, the number of ad accounts which were disabled for policy violations increased by 70% to over 1.7 million in 2020.
Google stated that malicious and misleading pandemic-related advertisements, such as those for miracle cures, N95 masks due to supply shortages, and, most recently, fake vaccine doses, were a major concern during the year. Google published covid policy ads to prevent such actions.
It also blocked or disabled over 867 million ads for attempting to evade its detection mechanisms, such as cloaking, and another 101 million ads for breaking the misrepresentation policies.
